A glimpse of New England . . . Rhode Island

We flew into Providence, Rhode Island, and arrived about midnight; it was pouring down rain. We rented a car without a GPS (you can rent them now for about $10 a day ~ and really . . . I thought I would rather spend $60 on treasures). We arrived at our Bed and Breakfast where the innkeeper had our room key ~ a real key ~ not a plastic card ~ in an envelope taped to the door. (This is the first thing we noticed . . . people don't worry about locking their doors or cars).
We stayed at the Edgewood Manor Inn, and it was amazing! It has been rated as having the 'best antiques', and you can see why . . .

We stayed in the Victorian home next door, which is part of Edgewood Manor.
The first night we had the whole house to ourselves.

Our room  . . .  it was old, not perfect, and I loved it!

 Take a look inside the manor . . .

the library

  This lamp was gorgeous!

 the dining room

a sitting room

the sun room . . . where we ate breakfast . . . just beautiful!

up the stairs and a peek inside a few of the other rooms . . .

My favorite piece in the whole house.

Before we took off in the morning, we realized we needed a GPS device; the streets and maps were just too confusing and I didn't want to spend my time looking at maps and missing the sites. So, first stop . . . Enterprise Rental Car.

some beautiful homes in the neighborhood and on Benefit Street in Providence

Downtown Providence . . . this one's for sale.

Wickford Village

Rhode Island, in review:
Edgewood Manor Inn Bed and Breakfast ~ highly recommend/great breakfasts by a chef
City of Providence ~ don't need to go there
Wickford Village ~ a cute little village with a few shops, only takes about an hour
Great group of Italian restaurants in Providence on Atwells Avenue ~ we ate at Andino's ~ excellent
Get a GPS device

Thanks for hanging out with the long post. I filled the whole camera card on this trip. If you like New England architecture, it's here. Next blog will be day 2 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

  4. Dear Julie: Exquisite photos! What a beautiful inn you stayed in! My eldest brother actually won a scholarship to Brown University in Providence many years ago. We travelled there many times over the course of his schooling as he played for the hockey team. He is ten years older than I but even as a child I remember all the history of this city. He actually roomed with some of the hockey players in an old victorian home near the university. What a nice 'walk down memory lane'. I would love to go back some day. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I agree about Providence! Newport would have been a place to stop..., the ocean drive, cliff walk or Sachuest Point park!!! I live nearby and we often go for great walks there.

  7. Dear Julie, What a wonderful glimpse of New England and especially of the interesting and varied architecture. You obviously picked, in Edgewood Manor, a delightful place in which to stay and somewhere which, judging from your pictures, has been very carefully and lovingly looked after.

Sadly, I have no idea what a GPS device is, nor why I should get one.
